In 1912 the ”Tarzan”-author Edgar Rice Burroughs published ”A Princess of Mars”. This was one of the first successful science fantasy-novels and was followed up by ten more books called the Barsoom-series.
The plot centers around John Carter, a 19th century veteran from the American Civil War who is magically transported to the planet Mars.
He discovers that the lower gravity gives him superstrength.
Shortly after his arrival he becomes a member of a native tribe of green-skinned Martians. With his powers he gets embroiled in the civil wars of Mars.
Nearly a century later Disney choose this story to make their own version of the billion dollar success ”Avatar”.
The movie was released in 2012 and was a spectacular failure at the box office.
Thousands of movie goers (and fans of the original books) went on social media and panned the movie.
